The Old Dominion Athletic Foundation (ODAF) announced today that 2017 was a record breaking fundraising year for ODU Athletics. Over $12 Million in new gifts and pledges was raised in support of ODU Athletics during the 2017 calendar year.
“This is a terrific reflection on our fans and corporate friends for their ongoing commitment to Old Dominion University and Old Dominion athletics,” University President John R. Broderick said. “It also reflects so favorably on the efforts of our ODAF volunteer leadership, led by Dan Clarkson and our staff led by Jena Virga. We have assembled a great team dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete experience here on campus. I am most grateful to all who were involved in some way.”
“Wow! I cannot say how thankful we are for the great support from our ODAF donors. The success that ODU athletics continues to experience is because of our generous donors and fans who continue to provide the necessary resources for our student-athletes and coaches to be successful,” Jena Virga, Senior Associate Athletic Director, said. “We are so grateful for our fundraising success in 2017 and look forward to a promising future.”
The record breaking fundraising year comes after President Broderick announced in his 2017 State of the University address, a $250 Million fundraising initiative for the University. As a part of the overall initiative, the ODAF has been charged with raising $40 Million in support of athletics. Funds raised from this initiative will be used to elevate the competitiveness of ODU’s athletic programs through facility enhancements including the renovation of Foreman Field at SB Ballard Stadium, increased scholarship support for student-athletes, and also to support the startup of a Division 1 women’s volleyball program.
“To see our supporters respond to this fundraising initiative so positively demonstrates the passion that our constituents have for ODU Athletics and our student-athletes,” Associate Athletic Director Drew Turner said. “Our ODAF Members are committed to our vision for ODU Athletics and aspire to be a nationally prominent Division 1 intercollegiate athletics program. Seeing that commitment is extremely encouraging as we look to the future.”
The $12 Million banner year represents the most money raised for ODU Athletics in the history of the institution and is an over 50% increase in athletic fundraising from the previous year. The ODAF had over 3,200 donors in 2017 and received 35 gifts or pledges of $25,000 or more, 19 of which were six figure commitments.
“What an amazing year for our Old Dominion Athletic Foundation. The record breaking $12M dollar year by ODAF reflects great leadership from Jena Virga, Drew Turner and the entire ODAF staff - all of whom form a development team that I feel is truly among the best in all of college athletics,” Athletics Director Dr. Wood Selig said. “Our donors have generously responded with their support and reflect a like-minded desire for ODU’s rise to national prominence. The timing of this philanthropic support is crucial given our ambitious new fundraising initiative for both the University and ODU athletics. These funds and commitments will go a long way towards assisting us achieve our competitive goals and provide a first class experience for our 500 student-athletes. I know I am not alone in saying thank you to all of our wonderful donors. “
