Are you an alumnus of ODU? Sue is an alumni, Jim is an adopted Monarch
What is your favorite memory of ODU Athletics? We have many favorite moments that we enjoy remembering. Certainly, the first football game stands out. It was a magical evening. Jim and I enjoy going to the Ted for basketball. There have been many exciting, nail-biting, and jubilant moments we have celebrated there with our friends.
Why do you support ODU Athletics and its student-athletes? In addition to the many stellar academic programs, ODU Athletics is helping raise public awareness of our terrific school and how important it is in helping students realize their dreams and potential.
What do you like most about ODU as a whole? We often comment on how many truly nice people we encounter at ODU functions, and how we are made to feel a part of the ODU family.
What makes you the most proud of ODU? As a retired educator, it means a lot to me that the student athletes are encouraged to take their studies seriously and work to their full potential. The athletic administrators, coaches, and staff place a priority on students getting their education and preparing to be top-notch individuals in life after college.
If you could describe ODU in one word, what word would it be and why?Welcoming. I wasn’t a traditional student. I spent years attending night classes off and on and finally went full time for 2 years while being a mom of two. The faculty and staff were helpful and made me feel at home. ODU has so much diversity in its students which further proves that it welcomes anyone who is willing to set goals and work hard to achieve them.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself? We have designated that our yearly contribution be pooled with others to fund an endowed scholarship as a memorial to our friend, Tom Garrett. We plan to leave a small bequest to ODAF and the School of Ed. We hope that our contribution, along with contributions from others, will help future students get the education they need to contribute to society and represent ODU well. We have come to realize that though our bequest may not be huge, it will help others. We hope other alumni will consider leaving a gift to ODU.
