Old Dominion Athletics continues to witness a Championship Effort among our approximately 500 student-athletes and 120 full time staff members and coaches. And Because of You and your Championship Effort, the growth and success of our student-athletes is a direct result of your generous support and investment in their lives.
Last fall, we had 12 teams with GPA’s of 3.0 or higher. Among our 494 student-athletes, 4% earned a 4.0 semester GPA, 33% earned Dean’s List Honors with a 3.4 GPA or higher, and nearly 60% earned a 3.0 GPA or higher. The top academic majors among our student-athletes are Sport Management/Exercise Science, Criminal Justice, Communications, and Biology.
Because of You and your Championship Effort, ODU athletics generated more than $20 million in revenue in 2015, which is an 82% increase in self-generated revenue over a 5-year period. Leading the way was the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation (ODAF) raising a record breaking $8.1 million in private support. Ticket sales were approximately $4 million, NCAA and Conference USA distribution totaled $3.25 million, and corporate sponsorships in the local community grossed $3 million. Since its inception, the ODAF has accumulated an endowment pool of approximately $27 million which is comprised of 70 funds generating almost $800,000 a year for ODU athletic scholarships. To endow all current intercollegiate athletic scholarships, it would require a $200 million endowment so start thinking planned giving to ODAF if you have not done so already.
ODU Athletics has also demonstrated Championship Effort in the local community. The total number of reported volunteer hours by our student-athletes and staff in 2014-15 was 7,800 hours. Community service and outreach event highlights include our annual Women’s Basketball Education Day which this past year marked the second consecutive sellout for ODU women’s basketball at The Ted Constant Center, Football’s Oyster Bowl Game which has raised over $100,000 for the Shriner’s Children Hospitals, and the We Feed Norfolk partnership which raised approximately 3,000 pounds of food and generated 2,400 meals.
To maintain our trajectory of success in all areas, a Championship Effort by all associated with ODU Athletics must continue. As we begin 2016, I ask that you continue your support of ODU Athletics and the ODAF and help us maximize our potential. A donation to the ODAF is an investment in the lives of our 494 student-athletes and our 18 intercollegiate athletic programs. On behalf of our student-athletes and staff, I thank you in advance for your support. Because of You, we create winners in the classroom, in athletic competition, and in life. Thank you for your generous support of ODU Athletics.
